Woodstock 1969

The Woodstock Music & Art Festival was the most famous rock festival of its era. It was held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km˛) dairy farm in Bethel, NY on 15, 16, and 17 August, 1969. The festival bears the name "Woodstock" because it was originally scheduled to take place in the town of Woodstock in Ulster County; local opposition arose, however, and the event was almost cancelled altogether. But Sam Yasgur persuaded his father Max to allow the concert to be held on the family's property.
Although the show had been planned for a maximum 50,000 attendees, over 400,000 eventually attended, most of whom did not pay admission. The highways leading to the concert were jammed with traffic as people tried to make it to the concert. It was rainy, the facilities were overcrowded, and attendees shared food & drink. No violence was reported and the fact that attendees were remarkably well behaved was particularly noted. The Woodstock Festival represented the culmination of the counterculture of the 1960s and the high point of the "hippie era".

B-52 Crash site Article 1 of 4

These articles are dedicated to those who serve our country and a memorial to those who gave their lives on this mountain in Maine
on January 24, 1963.

The B-52 flew out of Westover AFB, MA on a routine low-level radar mission, when it went down due to a structural fault. It had a wingspan of 185 feet and was 160 feet long from head to tail. There were no weapons aboard.

It crashed on this site 10 seconds after it's vertical stabilizer broke off on the east side of the mountain.

A crew of six and three observers were aboard. Two survived the crash. Of the two survivors, pilot, LTC Dante Bulli parachuted to the ground with a broken foot. His navigator, Gerald Adler is the only person to survive an ejection from an aircraft without the parachute opening. He landed upright in the snow in his ejection seat. Both men survived a night of -30 degrees temperature and five feet of snow before they were rescued. Adler retired from the Air Force, Bullii went on to fly again.

The other seven men on board perished in the crash.

The B-52 crash site on Elephant Mountain has been designated off-limits to all future salvage operations and the area surrounding the crash is a no harvest zone by order of Scott Paper Company and the Plum Creek Timber Company.

VALHALLA, New York 10595

Origin of name:
Valhalla, NY, gained its name when it was necessary to name a new US Post Office in the 19th century, due to the flooding of a pre-existing town and post office, Kensico, which is now underneath the lake created by the Kensico Dam (a part of the New York City Water System). According to local historians and published works, the wife of a postmaster was a devoted fan of the works of the composer Richard Wagner, and she shared that composer's interest in Norse mythology. Her preference led to the choice of name Valhalla, after the heavenly paradise of slain warriors in that mythology. Many noted people are buried in its cemeteries.
Highlights:
Valhalla is located in the town of Mount Pleasant. The main street in Valhalla is Columbus Avenue which runs the length of the hamlet. Along this road is the Valhalla Train Station, the Kensico Dam, Holy Name of Jesus Church as well as other shops and restaurants. The Valhalla ZIP code (10595) includes portions of the towns of Mount Pleasant, Greenburgh and North Castle. The hamlet is bordered by the North White Plains area of the Town of North Castle, the northernmost portion of the Town of Greenburgh and the hamlets of Thornwood and Hawthorne, both within Mount Pleasant. The Valhalla School District, comprising parts of the three towns, is served by The Virginia Road Elementary School, and the Kensico School and Valhalla Middle and High Schools, all located along Columbus Avenue in Mount Pleasant. Some residents with Valhalla addresses are in the Mount Pleasant Central School District, served by Westlake high school in Thornwood. The Valhalla train station is located right off the Taconic State Parkway, across from the hamlet's commercial center. The train station is the next major stop of Metro North Railroad after North White Plains. From Wikipedia

The World's Greatest Aqueduct

Water From The Catskill Mountains To The City Of New York

Starting at the Ashokan reservoir in upstate New York (Catskills) the water travels to the Kensico Lake in Valhalla, New York and onto New York City for consumption.

In the late 1930's my father was working for Circle Construction Company out of White Plains, NY on the aqueduct in Valhalla, NY. As an amateur photographer he took many photos during his travels throughout the East Coast.

Wonder if anybody recognizes anyone on the work crews.

Many of the people who built the Kensico Dam and Plaza settled in the Valhalla
area.

Mom preserved these photos in a family album for use all to enjoy.

Stone, Woods & Cook 1941 Willys Gasser B/GS

Stone, Woods & Cook 1941 Willys Gasser B/GS. (SWINDLER II)
The Michigan Hot Rod Association has given the 2008 Preservation Award to this racer. It will be on display at the 56th Detroit Autorama, Cobo Hall, March 6-9, 2008.

The photos in primer were of the car mocked up for fits and part arrangement. The dark blue front end is the original painted Cal Automotive fiberglass pieces that are untouched today. I actually had Rich Venza make some thin replacement race style front pieces to allow us to keep the original front end as part of our display. The interior is completely original Ed Martinez from California. This interior has always been part of the car even when it was a street rod. The era that we tried to capture was 1962 when the car competed at Indy. That is what the outside color and the lettering reflects. At that time the second car (Swindler "A") did not exist so I wanted this car not to take away from the accomplishments of the "A" car. The lettering was originally done by Big Daddy Ed Roth and Larry Hook has captured it to the Nth degree. I can't say enough about his efforts. He was passionate about getting it exact. In 62 they ran an Olds 394 motor which is what is in the car. The trans is an original B&M. Other original parts include the body, frame, traction bars, complete interior, moon tank, headlights, tow bars, bumper and bumper brackets. The restoration took 3 years mostly of research and searching for period correct parts. Joe Troilo.

Joe Troilo restored the car for the current owner Mike Wales. Joe is a two time builder and one time owner of this historic racer.
Thanks to Joe Troilo and Joe Grippo for the photographs.
